My opinion, shite happens. I got my first piece of @$$ when I was younger than she is. If the girl had gotten knocked up, I would have probably jumped off a building, but that's besides the point. The thing is, if you find out you're pregnant at 11, what can you do? Abortion? Yeah, righ. Then you spend life with the guilt of killing your child, not to mention everyone else pointing their finger at you. Thing is, alot of us got laid before we even knew what pubic hair was and we all know it. What if the girl got knocked up? What if you were the girl knocked up? What would you do about it? Whether you're ready or not, kinda have to deal with it.

Firstly, to all of those who think this is some sort of political victory over Britain, this sort of thing happens everywhere there is society, or indeed, a distinct lack of it. Secondly, Britain isn't a country; the silly cow's Scottish.

Seriously, however, this is exactly the reason that society is in decline. How can parents expect to raise children properly when they're still children themselves? This is just a high profile and highly valid example of the threat of teenage pregnancy.

As far as I'm concerned, sex and procreation are now two seperate things as the latter is now not necessarily the reason for the former. This was evidenced in 1993 in Holland, where they lowered the age of consent to twelve-years-old and thoroughly educated young people. As a result, that generation and this have given Holland the lowest teen-pregnancy rate in Europe. This also blows claims that an eleven-year old is not mentally fit to make the choice to have sex very much out of the water.

In line with sex and parenthood being seperate issues, I believe that the age of consent should indeed be lowered from sixteen (or eighteen) and more emphasis should be put on educating people. With that said, I'd also like to see a minimum age of parenthood introduced, however this is most unlikely and only really possible if abortion was universally accepted, which for some reason, it is not.

This system would be far from foolproof, and I dare say that our eleven-year-old mother-to-be would still slip through the net, however there is hope that restructure would better educate her child not to make the same mistakes.

Reading through this topic, I've found few people who find the girl's mother absolutely culpable, however I find her blatant disregard for her own daughter disgusting. She is responsible for her daughter's drinking, smoking and lifestyle, and therefore most to blame for her daughter's pregnancy. This may sound contradictory to what I stated earlier, however the ignorance of the girl would not be to the extent that it is if her mother had actually been a competant parent. I've known since I was eight years old that it doesn't matter whether it's your first time or not, a girl can get pregnant if no precautions are taken, and I have my parents to thank for that particular peice of information.

The girl's mother's so-called 'pride' at her daughter's choice to keep the baby is unfathomable to me; even if the girl does go on to make something of her life, it's going to be at the expense of the child, and if she was to put her child first, then her life is put on hold from the age of eleven until her child is capable of looking after itself - and it should be a while longer than eleven years, a good while.
