A new "zero-day" vulnerability has emerged in Microsoft Office products - one that installs a backdoor using rootkit technology to hide itself. Rootkits easily stand out as the greatest threat to site security. In the wake of the Sony BMG fiasco, users need to understand how they work o combat this growing problem. OmniNerd carries a detailed, yet simple to understand explanation.

it would be really good if there were 'vigilante hackers' that actually understood this stuff and hacked into computers, fixed them up and left.

If there are people out there doing this, nice one.

This is old news. I'm sure damn near everyone who reads any news online is familiar with Sony putting the rootkits on their music cds.

It's a great way for them to decrease sales. The irony is the people who actually buy the music get punished, the local warez rat couldn't care less about a rootkit :D

Well rootkits are actually pretty nice.
The problem is actually hacking the firewall and router.
It is very complex to actually get this program onto their machine...

Thats why you never give you comp to a repair place....
....like geek squad....their underpaid...especially if they have to go to some nigger's shack in the ghetto...

Imaging, risking your life to fix some comp, and best buy is making so much money off of you, its disguisting....

Geek squad is pretty pathetic...they charge you $50 for installing and uninstalling NAV....
I used to have a friend that worked there....

They only specialize in windows....

Me and my friend disguised a linux machine as windows XP and gave it to them.....they ended up paying me $100 for wasted time after i threatened to sue.....HAHAHAHAH

About a year ago now I saw an Asus motherboard that had an onboard firewall.

Taking security to the hardware level and implementing it in a way that joe schmoe is going to be protected whether he wants it or not, is in my opinion a Good Thing.

At the least it will give idiots who don't have or know/care about antivirus & firewalls a layer of protection.

While education is the best defence, let's face it, the average user is dead-set on staying stupid.

I say get firewalls onboard on more motherboards.

the4thwallOn Iran, From an American Iranian
I have an Iranian background, so throughout my life I've been bombarded with opinions on the country. Not only that, both my parents were involved in the late 70's revolution, and saw youth that helped Khomeini get to power being shot down by Khomeini's followers afterwards. That's the problem with revolutions, sometimes a power vacuum can destroy what could be a beautifull transformation. On top of that, I have dual citizen ship, and voted in the last election, whi...

KhramHappy Canada Day!
Today is the day the greatest nation that ever existed on Earth began 142 years ago. Canadians have much to be proud of. However, even the greatest nation on Earth still has its problems. The Russians threaten our airspace with their shitty planes and violate our sovereign waters with their submarines up in the Arctic. We should be shooting their planes down and sinking their subs as they cross our borders without warning. None of our politicians have the balls to at...
