"I stand before you today with the strength and clarity and resolve to declare to the military, my government and the world that this soldier will not be deploying to Iraq," Chiroux said in the sun-filled rotunda of a congressional building in Washington.

"George Bush just sent the soldiers to retaliate against the attack at 911. Many forget that this was thought of highly at the time in the majority of the public, because everyone was so pissed off about the attack"

Nice revisionism.
Osama did 911. He was in Afghanistan, then later Pakistan. He was no where near Iraq. If you actually did some reading, you'd realize that the White House bumped up false statements leading to going into Iraq.

The WH cronies flaunted exagerated evidence, and scudded anything and anyone who didn't follow their bullshit policy. Colin Powell (traitor) gave his speech about tubes and wmds and nukes and he was lying straight out his ass.

Congress was decieved into going in there. Anyone who said otherwise was criticized and labelled a terrorist sympathizer, which is a political death sentence since so many dumbass Americans were buying that horse shit.

Since then, much more information has come to light reinforcing the fact that it was a deceptive, illegal occupation. You naysayers have no problem calling him a coward, but you all seem to forget he served in other countries.

Dude, I don't give a fuck how poor your family was, that shouldn't hold any weight against your future. My family was poor as fuck to, I didn't just give up on bettering myself and join the military.

Oooh, and now hes a big man, and he can think for himself now so he isnt going to Iraq. What a load of shit. DO YOUR FUCKING JOB! YOU SHOULD HAVE TRIED TO BETTER YOURSELF INSTEAD OF JUST GIVING UP AND JOINING SOMETHING YOU AREN'T GONNA COMMIT TO!

You're missing the point of why this young man is featured. Sure, he voluntarily signed up for the armed forces. His motive may have been that of money, duty to country or wanting to be productive in life. When he signed up, however, he expected to not be put in situations where he felt he was compromising his integrity and values. He didn't think that he'd be in a situation where he'd have to question the ordered actions of the armed forces.

There is no draft (yet), he can leave when he likes. To stand up and scream "No, I won't go" is first of all an insult to everyone else that is over there. He is in the military, granted he has served his country in past conflicts but this is what he signed up for. It's not all free money and education. As far as compromising his integrity and values, either pack up and leave or shut up.

What I respect about this kid is that he's still taking responsibility for his actions. He didn't try to run to Canada, or flee to nations south of the US. He stood before Congress and expressed his heartfelt beliefs before his peers, Congress and the American people, and is willing to take whatever punishment (did you catch that part?) he may have to endure for his stance.

I can agree that he does have some balls doing this. To refuse your orders is an act of treason, welcome to military jail.

It is so rare for a soldier to do what he and others have done that it gets a lot of attention, generates debate, and forces us patriots (for and against the war) to ask some hard questions about what we're up to and what we are up against over there.

For the retards upstairs waving his dishonorable discharge in his face, I would bet you that is low on his worry list. He's got to be more concerned with not losing more of his brothers over there, don't you think? John Kerry did the same thing (in a way) and History proved him right.

CLARIFICATION:

DESERTER defined by the UCMJ (Military Law) states: Absent for the period of 30 days AND having the intention to not return.

If he returns, they can't charge him with deserter, they can charge him with AWOL (Absent Without Leave).

I should know, I had to go AWOL for decent medical care after they fucked up a surgery and told me I was fine. I had to have a second surgery to fix it, I was gone for 6 months having surgery and recovering. BUT I turned myself in when I was healed, so the deserter status was null and void.

I love how all you chickenhawks bash this guy for standing up for whats right. I took the same Oath that he did.

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

We have a responsibilty to the nation, not just the asshole running it into the ground.

"If you're working at McDonalds and then one day you decide "Fuck these hamburgers. I'm not making them anymore. They make people fat and that's not right!"

What would you say to that?"

I'd say, Don't work at McDonalds, then. What would you say? Make those burgers or you're a coward?

That might have been the most retarded analogy of all time. You scored in your own goal. Congratulations.

everyone here doesnt seem to realize that he CANT just pack up his shit and leave. if you refuse to follow orders they throw you in military prison untill your service was suposed to be up.

i think anyone who wants should be able to leave the military any time they want without going to prison. our military leaders would NEVER agree to that because then they would have no leverage to make these poor young men comit genocide. if you could leave any time you want there would be half the servicemen in iraq as there are now.

basicly its like this: comit genocide for me or ill ruin your life.

FidoQuick Take On The RNC
Being an open minded individual, I decided to spend a couple hours watching the Republican national convention in St Paul, or Minneapolis, Minnesota, or wherever it is. I had initially tuned in to watch Sarah Palin’s address, in order to maybe get a read on what she may be all about. I regret that I couldn’t get that far. After viewing Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani speak to the delegates, I felt an overwhelming need to seek asylum in another country. ...
