My favorite games from an era that no one wants to remember.
Since it's 80’s week, I thought I would keep with the spirit by talking about the best and possibly the most influential games of the 1980’s. Back in the 80’s gaming was a simpler thing, it was either good or it was shit and relied solely on game play. At the present time gaming is more focused on graphics as opposed to game play, where games are becoming more visually appealing at the expense of a terrible gaming experience. However, this does not apply to every new game that is out on the market, just most of them. Without further ado, here is my list of the ten best video games from the 80’s (in no special order, it was hard enough just to pick them).
Contra
Contra was one of the most badass games of its time. It not only had guns blazing and enemies around every corner, but also had smooth controls and good graphics, which made the game that much better. A moderately difficult game, I’m surprised that Hollywood hasn’t bastardized it by making a movie on it, considering how much action is in the game.
Frogger
Who doesn’t remember this game? One of the trademark games of the past that has taken the change of thousands of children all over North America. Back in the day when Konami didn’t suck were in their prime and made Frogger. A game that’s simple, addictive, and surprisingly fun (when played with other people), the perfect combination. Now that I think about it, the game didn’t make much sense. The frog was about as wide as a lane yet the cars wouldn’t stop. Then again, the 80’s wasn’t about rational thinking.
The Legend of Zelda
I can only describe this game with one word: epic. This game influenced a generation of kids and demonstrated the potential a video game can reach. There have been numerous sequels and remakes over the past twenty years, some better than others and hopefully more to follow (before they start making shitty versions for the sake of profit). Even still, The Legend of Zelda was one of the most influential games of the past and even the present.
Tetris
Tetris is nothing more than blocks falling down, yet it is somehow entertaining and addictive. This game will most likely be played and be well known for at least another fifty years. Who knew that something so simple could be so popular. Through my experience, Tetris is a must have for all lectures, entertaining enough to keep you awake, but not too visually demanding.
1943
For those that have never played or heard of 1943 should try it. This game made the list because this type of game is a dying breed (if not already dead), since the last game of this type of genre was Crimson Skies for the Xbox. This game is nothing but addictive, entertaining action where children control a single fighter plane that has to win the war. This is achieved by destroying every plane flying in a symmetrical pattern or destroying battleships while avoiding enemy attacks, kamikazes, and the like.
Donkey Kong
This game is probably on every top ten gaming list from the 80’s, anything I add will most likely have already been said.
Street Fighter
Street Fighter was one of the earliest fighting games ever made (if not the first). This game has been remade numerous times for a variety of gaming consoles and is considered the predecessor of Mortal Kombat. This game has resulted in movies (with a new one coming out in a few years), anime, and probably anything else you can think of.
Pacman
Pacman was released in the early 80’s, started the latest trend and is considered an important part of the 80’s pop culture. Some are even audacious enough to claim Pacman is more popular than Super Mario. Hell, they even made a song about it that turned out to be a smash hit called Pacman Fever. If a video game can inspire a song, it deserves to be on the top ten.
Mega Man
Released in 1987, this game is one of the best ever made. With a novel idea and good game play, it had success written all over it. The different types of powers that Mega Man could collect rectified for the unoriginal Boss names like Cut Man or Guts Man. This game inspired a television show and video game series, which only became better.
Super Mario
Arguably, the best game ever made, Super Mario defined Nintendo and created a generation of fan boys. Mario's first appearance was in the game Donkey Kong and can be found in a large variety of game genres and spin offs. The most notable Mario game of the 80’s is Super Mario 3, which was better than the previous two Mario games combined. Considering its age Super Mario is still as popular, if not more, than it ever was.
Thus concludes my favourite ten video games from the 1980’s. Even though most of the 80’s sucked; video games were in their prime.
