A review of the heavily hyped sequel to the 2005 franchise reboot of Batman.
Not since The Matrix Reloaded has the hype been so high for a sequel to an original film. But what The Matrix Reloaded failed at was living up to the hype. The Dark Knight doesn’t just live up to the hype, it blows past it.
This movie is based off of comic books, but you forget that fact when you’re sitting on edge during the whole movie. I normally wouldn’t want to increase the hype of a film before any of you see it, but I can’t help it. I went in to the theater with the highest expectations, and I stumbled out of the theater film drunk after seeing a film so breath taking, you have to pinch yourself to know you’re not dreaming.
Most of the hype for the film is surrounding the late Heath Ledger. The Oscars are 8 months away and critics are rooting for him. Will he get it? He better get it. What if he doesn’t? Then forget the Oscars, they will be null and void if he doesn’t even get a nod. His performance of the Joker redefines the character. He’s not a normal villain, he is the ultra villain. Heath Ledger as the Joker is insane, self destructive, and the enemy to end all enemies. He in all sense of the words just wants to “watch the world burn.” He isn’t in it for the money (trust me on this), but he just has one plan; watch good people become twisted. Show the world that even the best of people can be the bad guy.
Enter Harvey Dent. Gotham’s newly elected district attorney. He is called a white knight that’s out for all the crooks and bad guys of the city, even Batman. The movie is basically surrounding him through out and even though you root for his character, in the back of your mind you know how it all plays out. He will become Two-Face, and there’s no stopping it. The way his character falls from grace will really affect you because it has happened in real life to people who are noble and generally good people, which is jokers ambition through out.
Christian Bale is again brilliant as the heroic Batman. He has his voice down as Batman, where as it was a kind of struggle in Begins. Bruce Wayne will have to face his biggest foe to date in the Joker, and will have to look in the mirror many times to see how far he will push himself to stop a mad man.
The supporting cast again fills out their roles respectively. Gary Oldman is so good you forget he’s even acting as the incorruptible police officer, and Morgan Freeman and Michael Cane shine as Lucius Fox and Alfred as expected. Newcomer Maggie Gyllenhaal replaces stale Katie Holmes as Batman’s love interest Rachael Dawes. I approve of her taking the role because she brings the strength of the character out and does a great job.
I witnessed the film in IMAX, and assure you that you owe it to yourself to see it there. The action scenes and cityscape flyovers leave you dazzled at the scope of the film. Staring at a 7 story screen at the best movie I have ever seen is something that sticks with you forever.
The script, direction, and cinematography is flawless and the way all the villains are inter-weaved together in the plot is something Spider Man 3 wished it had achieved, yet failed miserably. Iron Man was a brilliant comic book movie, but The Dark Knight was a brilliant crime film comparable to The Godfather II, or The Empire Strikes Back in sequel terms.
This film should be nominated for awards that haven’t even been created yet. I said before that I didn’t want to overhype the film, but honestly, this film sets the new bar on not just comic book films, but generally all film making from this point on. Remember where you were when you saw this film. It should be in history books soon after
