I liked the comment about pinning icons to the task bar

It's called quick start.

Any substantial advantages of switching to Win7 from XP? What about downfalls?

Well, its beta. Thats a downfall cause it will crash sometimes. Plus Drivers are in Beta. But its really impressed me. I'd say install it on a separate partition.

that's what i have done. and i really enjoy it. it is way better than XP in terms of resource management and it is a lot faster. but there are some annoying things about it like the task bar bellow, sometimes you don't know which programs are running and which aren't. but i do like the idea.
i am definitely getting windows 7 when it goes retail. it is that good.

I don't have any questions. I've been using it first hand and it is a beautiful thing.

I bet one could run Win7 happily on a P2. No lie. Shit's fast.

It really is, the one thing I've found is games like counter strike source where if you minimize them and then bring it back up it takes forever. But now in Windows 7 it is really fast. Currently I have Firefox, steam, vent, and a bunch of other programs and my stuff is only using 600mb of ram. This is a very very effeciant OS. Microsoft has gotten this one right. I love XP, but this has made a believer out of me again. We'll just consider Windows Vista, Windows Me bastard cousin who they smoke crank together with and no one really likes and talks about anymore..

Oh, and to the Linux users, I currently run a Linux server with Debian.. Its a great OS, very very stable, but when I play games I don't want to have to configure Wine right to get it to play my games. Its far easier to just run Windows OS to run Windows programs. OS are like cars. You choose the right one for your using. I'm not going to use a sports car to haul lumber. Just like I'm not going to use an SUV when its just me for commuting. Mac, Linux/Unix, and Windows all have their place people. Its all about the task at hand.

I use win7 beta and so do 2 of my friends. It's very quick and stable. It hasn't blue screened on me yet. Before installing make sure that your hardware has vista drivers and it should work, also keep in mind that it's just a beta at the moment so crashes/bugs are to be expected.
The interface is not that much of a mac ripoff but there are some features that I saw in OSX (such as moving your mouse to the lower right side will make all the windows hide)
In my opinion the OS will spawn full touchscreen-no-keyboard netbooks since it plays really nice with touchscreen interfaces.
Control panel is neatly organised and UAC is now "smarter" so you can tick a "never ask me again" box. Also if you disable it the OS won't keep bugging you about it

couldnt you "pin" icons to the taskbar in vista? havent we been doing that in xp for years? thats not exactly an exciting feature, itd be like selling a car without headlights for a few yrs, then adding them again and acting like its an awesome new addition. its been done, we expect it, dont give us this fake ass new and improved bullshit!

Do you feel that there is a better platform for gaming on 7 than vista, and are there any DX10 updates?

Now, before I go any further let me make the observation that I shall not follow the title nor the description of this piece. As much as needs be served by a common comma.  Or a stripe begging for another one.  In my journeys, as seldom as they are, I have found a common virtue.  That virtue is a simple pattern...
