To much applause, G-20 leaders affirmed their resistance to protectionism in yesterday's communiqué. "World trade growth has underpinned rising prosperity for half a century," the leaders proclaimed. "We will not repeat the historic mistakes of protectionism of previous eras."

At last, a worthy article that discusses at an intellectual level the reality of the G-20 commune.

The concept of protectionism in an nutshell- propping up the mega companies that were providing the biggest economic strength to the US economy. This article highlights so very well what the crux of the problems are.

Nice find.

I am a street guy so I'll tell you what I like about Professor Boudreaux's argument.

Protectionsim is just another word for guarantee and I see no natural or logical reason for why I am expected to guarantee the job and income of someone I have no relationship to.

Being in the same territorial boundaries is not a relationship, it is a coincidence, a circumstance if you will. If I am to be expected to guarantee the job and income of someone in Maine, why not in France as well? The downside to me is the same, it is a drag on my incentive and reduction in my own wealth.

I do not expect anyone to offer me that guarantee, and I see no reason to extend it to others.

It is reasonable to expect that if we be obligated to guarantee another his job and income, why not guarantee that he have a lovely and loving girlfriend or wife? Why not guarantee perfectly behaved children? How about a guarantee to a well trained dog? Why not guarantee all the wonderful things he wants?

To the street person it is idiocy or insanity to get wrapped up in guaranteeing to another those things he should produce from his own natural efforts. I am sorry but competition is part of the natural world, we compete and win, or we lose.

It always was and it always will be."

Stimulis is another word for arse rape. They are just giving more of the everday persons money to the fat cunts who already have more than they can possibly spend, to do with as they please.

I heartily believe that if your company needs a government stimulis package to stay alive then you are already neck deep in fail and deserve to go under. Too bad about the jobs but with all that redirection of wealth more jobs will open up.

Monoliths are destined to do exactly one thing. Topple into a screaming heap. It is time the outdated american motor industry died because they can't seem to get their head around the fact that times have moved on since the 50's to 70's era and now they need to copy the Japs. Also the insurance companies and banks etc that threw caution to the wind and ignored the realities of risk need to fail also as it was their greed/irresponsibility that bought the world to this point anyway.... them and your US senators with shares in private security firms that have been arse raping the US public of their taxes to the tune of billions per year for the last 8 or so years.

No such thing as "too big to let fail"

Nice to see some politics back on SW. Some religion argue would be nice too ... damnable God botherers

Now, before I go any further let me make the observation that I shall not follow the title nor the description of this piece. As much as needs be served by a common comma.  Or a stripe begging for another one.  In my journeys, as seldom as they are, I have found a common virtue.  That virtue is a simple pattern... But all seize it, and all know it well.  For it is the definition before the act.  It is why and who and when and that t...
