They would only need to rename if it was called the "Classic conservatism party". Republican isn't a political position like liberal or conservative. It's a political party.

For the same reason the Republicans owned the senate and house for a large number of years. People think that one party will be better or that it will change everything and right all the wrongs that other party made. It never happens and then Party X which is in power screws up royally and then everyone apparently forgets how Party Y also screwed them, was just as bad and disliked and the people vote Party Y into power only to repeat this over and over and over and over and over...

In my opinion the reason the democrats currently are very popular(Besides what I said above) is because they have no real views or opinions. They say they support this and that when it's popular and will win them votes. Then when the said issue becomes unpopular among people(Iraq, anyone?)They go back on what they said they truly believed, they say they were actually never for it etc...Eventually people will catch on to this tactic. Hopefully...
