A recent trip to my local movie theater and the realization I made about who was sitting behind me.
I am writing this very early in the morning, so pardon any incoherent thoughts in the follow:
I went to go see the remake of Friday the 13th opening weekend (leave comments about the remake to yourself) and couldn't help but notice that a parent had brought their 3 kids with them. Strangling enough, all of them had to have been under 10. And I thought to myself, what the hell are the parents thinking? Anyone who has seen the movie know that there is a lot of blood, and just about as many boobs. Parents would have to know that this movie would contain these things.
In a realated note, I visited my local GameStop (leave comments about that store to yourself) and a mother was buying a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV for your, what was about 7 year old son. And the clerk asked the woman if she still wanted to buy it even though it was rated M, and she said "whatever, he's been buggin' me for 2 weeks about this game, so I'm getin' it to shut him up."
...awesome
Now I'm not gonna be all hardcore about this and say that violence in movies and games results in Columbine wannabees. Just like Marylin Manson music doesn't make you kill people, movies and videos don't do it either. It's just entertainment, not mind control. What drives people to do that is much deeper. But to say it does nothing is a lie. We are still influences by that entertainment. I remembering hearing about some kids that died after seeing the first The Fast and the Furious movie when it came out. They were influenced by the street racing to try it out for themselves. So they did their own street race and one of the cars crashed and the 2 people inside died. I can't say this was ALL because of that movie, but it helped influence them. And I'm not saying that seeing something like American History X is going to cause kids to shoot the person they don't like while they are in the bathroom. But if you're wondering why your little son or daughter is saying "god damn it" after he or she was sitting in the room while you were watching South Park, maybe it was because you had no discretion or responsibility. So after taking your kids to see Friday the 13th, or buying them GTA IV and they are acting up at school and bullying people, maybe it was because you were too stupid and selfish to think about the ramifications about what your where doing.
So, instead of parents trying to blame different forms of entertainment for problems with their kids, they need blame themselves for allowing their kids to watch and parcipate in those kinds of activities. Grow a pair, tell your kids no, and then lead them slowing into this kind of stuff so they can be transitioned to accept and understand it, and not be conditioned to perform it.
