Monday Governor Ed Rendell decided to partially shut down the PA state government in response to budget disputes with the legislature. Highway maintenance will be shut down, parks and museums will close, licensing functions will be stopped, the lights of the capitol building will be turned off, and… chaos will ensue?

It's true, goverment is great for establishing a country in the world, and making decesions about rather or not to go to war. Road improvements etc.

But as far as school and healthcare and all the other useless organizations that say they are doing something important and really pocketing the money, they are not needed.

Small Goverment is a better goverment.

"FCC, FDA, FAA, TSA, NSA, CIA"

Aside from the NSA and CIA, you do actually need those organisations.

Unless you like arsenic in your toothpaste, computers that blow up in your face (bloody chinese), road anarchy...

Didnt we just have a problem with toothpaste while under the purview of the FDA? And dont forget about the spinach and dog food. The FDA is of no practical use.

''Maybe schools and health care can be provided more effectively in a true, unregulated free market''

^ That would be the worst thing that could happen to any country. Libertarianism is the worst form of government that could ever exist.

@Kratein

No, when you didn't have organisations like those, half the fucking world died of bubonic plague, disease was rife due to unsanitary water, and so on. People would die from fucking horse carts collapsing, can you imagine having a passenger jet blow into pieces because some moron saved money by thinning parts of it? Aside from the bullshit the FDA does, they do filter out the quack doctors.

Want to live without these organisations? Go visit Africa, or a third world country, your anarchistic arse won't be missed.

By the way, I actually do have experience living in third world shitholes. They aren't nice because of the very lack of regulation from those organisations.

QED & STFU.

Completely free markets are bullshit. People have to die before anything gets changed. Regulation moves it a step back and forces companies to look out for things other than their personal greed & stock portfolios.

Examples:

Seatbelts
Tobacco advertising
Medicines with odd side effects
Shoddy chinese goods

Of course, those are the most blindingly obvious examples off the top of my head.

If you're one of the people who are anti-seatbelt, go the full way and break the speed limit. Let natural selection take precedence.

@meh

Half of the "fucking world" died of bubonic plague because medical technology was not as advanced as it is today. The same goes for the water systems.

Horse carts collapsing? There are a few states that do not have motor vehicle inspections and the accident rates per capita in those states are not higher than the ones who do have inspections.

The problem with third world countries (especially those in Africa that you speak of) is that they do have a government and the worst possible kind. They have violent gangs that rule over them and murder them, enacting violence on them. To think that the United Staes could possibly regresss to such a state is utterly absurd.

As far as the passenger jets go, they crash now all the time. And if it was shown that a crash was due to neglect people could sue for damages. Not only that, but they would suffer from loss of business. I know I wouldnt be using that airline.

Could you imagine if we were allowed by the government to carry weapons on planes? If we were and the airline chose to llow it, its likely that 9/11 wouldn't have turned out the way it did.

Seatbelt laws are terrible. When was it ever the governments job to protect us from ourselves?

If by tobacco advertising you mean marketing to children then I have a question: Where are the parents in this equation? And where does it end? Do we get rid of Ronald McDonald because he markets bad food to children? Say goodbye to Toucan Sam. We can't advertise sugary food to children either!!!

Shoddy chinese goods still get in under the purview of the government. They do not protect us and are an utter waste of money. And really, you cant expect them to protect us. It would be impossible to inspect every good that ever enters the country.

As for medicines, people die every year because the FDA will not allow them access to eperimental medication. Its truly a sad state of affairs.

Oh and btw, I speed everyday on my way to work but I DO wear a seatbelt. Not because its the law, but because its smart. Its also worth noting that Ive never received a speeding ticket. Shows how ineffective the police are too.

Alright, on the first point, I'll give you that. What I mean is the lack of an organised body enforcing things like quarantine, vaccination, etc.

"Horse carts collapsing? There are a few states that do not have motor vehicle inspections and the accident rates per capita in those states are not higher than the ones who do have inspections."

Yes, due to the meticulous amount of regulation the car manufacturers have to conform to. If we didn't have organisations enforcing standards, it would be pretty fucking horrid.

"The problem with third world countries (especially those in Africa that you speak of) is that they do have a government and the worst possible kind. Correct. Of course, there's a shitload of factors. Armed gangs don't usually storm food factories, however. Strawman, by the way. I'm not saying the USA will descend into anarchy. I'm not in a position to comment about that anyway.

"As far as the passenger jets go, they crash now all the time. And if it was shown that a crash was due to neglect people could sue for damages. Not only that, but they would suffer from loss of business. I know I wouldnt be using that airline."

But people have to die to get the point across! That's what I'm trying to say. They crash because of lack of tight regulations. Sometimes just suicidal pilots.

"Could you imagine if we were allowed by the government to carry weapons on planes? If we were and the airline chose to llow it, its likely that 9/11 wouldn't have turned out the way it did."

Alright. In this regulation free environment, everyone brings an AK47/M16 onto the plane. A group of terrorists biding their time emerge and attempt to hijack the plane. Not so, because our vigilante passengers are armed to the teeth. "Rat-tat-tat" go the bullets and the terrorists are goners. *BOOM* goes the plane, because the windows aren't bulletproof, and the metal used is too flimsy. Well, 400 people just died, but we'll make sure it doesn't happen next time, right?

"Seatbelt laws are terrible. When was it ever the governments job to protect us from ourselves?"

Since Ug and Ugg mutually agreed to not hurt each other back in the neanderthal age. Which is why we have a police force.

"If by tobacco advertising you mean marketing to children then I have a question: Where are the parents in this equation? And where does it end? Do we get rid of Ronald McDonald because he markets bad food to children? Say goodbye to Toucan Sam. We can't advertise sugary food to children either!!!"

Hey, I don't condone plastic food either. Tobacco was advertised as a mouth cleanser. Turns out it gives you mouth cancer. Good for the lungs, good for the heart, all-in-one cure for everything. But hey, along comes something called "science" and *shazzam*, the free-market dream is killed. Evil science, evil indeed. If you want a free market, everyone has to be on guard. Who the fuck is bothered to check whether Prozac Revision 162 still makes you suicidal?

"Shoddy chinese goods still get in under the purview of the government. They do not protect us and are an utter waste of money. And really, you cant expect them to protect us. It would be impossible to inspect every good that ever enters the country."

Lack of regulation. Having these organisations hosted under the government just make it easier. They don't have to be. Government or not, we need them.

"It would be impossible to inspect every good that ever enters the country."

It was impossible to check every air passenger's baggage thoroughly a few years back.

"As for medicines, people die every year because the FDA will not allow them access to eperimental medication. Its truly a sad state of affairs."

Blame Bush. FDA is not a good example.

"Oh and btw, I speed everyday on my way to work but I DO wear a seatbelt. Not because its the law, but because its smart. Its also worth noting that Ive never received a speeding ticket. Shows how ineffective the police are too."

Natural selection. In the UK, you speed, the cameras flash, and you owe the government £80 as a penance for your stupidity. Still, speeding dickheads kill children every year. Natural selection, maybe. Preventable? 100%.

Ideally, the whole concept of free market would be wonderful. Unfortunately, this is Earth. Not Cloud 9. You choose from either having the government ream your ass, or a corporation. Less chance of dying when it's from the government.

the4thwallOn Iran, From an American Iranian
I have an Iranian background, so throughout my life I've been bombarded with opinions on the country. Not only that, both my parents were involved in the late 70's revolution, and saw youth that helped Khomeini get to power being shot down by Khomeini's followers afterwards. That's the problem with revolutions, sometimes a power vacuum can destroy what could be a beautifull transformation. On top of that, I have dual citizen ship, and voted in the last election, whi...

KhramHappy Canada Day!
Today is the day the greatest nation that ever existed on Earth began 142 years ago. Canadians have much to be proud of. However, even the greatest nation on Earth still has its problems. The Russians threaten our airspace with their shitty planes and violate our sovereign waters with their submarines up in the Arctic. We should be shooting their planes down and sinking their subs as they cross our borders without warning. None of our politicians have the balls to at...
