It is a sanctioned professional method, but ONLY with metallic paint. With metallic paint this is necessary to let the colours of the newly painted area blend in with the older paint because it is impossible to get the exact same colour with metallic paint because of the metallic particles in the paint.

But when you use a normal paint you must always spray the entire body part until the edges but carefully cover all other parts around the one you spray.
