I really, really, really hate this song. I respect Cash as an artist, though I'm not a fan, and most of his stuff I have no problem with. But he has no business covering Nine Inch Nails; industrial rock is really not his genre. Reznor did a beautiful job with the original version of this song, and while most covers bring a refreshing new flavor to an old tune, Cash just sounds like he's talking. Plus, the lyric change really gets me ("I wear this crown of shit" to "I wear this crown of thorns"); IMO, that's disrespectful to the original artist, basically saying that they did it wrong.

I really like this cover. Quincy might hate it, but i think the thing that makes it okay is the fact that he changes the meaning of the song by the way he plays it, and by the context and tone of the cover.

When Trent plays this song, (especially on piano) it has the meaning and tone of a specific and present state of mind.

However, when Cash plays it, it comes across as more of a declaration and reflection on his life and legacy.

Some of the lyric changes I don't consider to be disrespectful to Trent, but are just slight tweaks to convey a different message. I think if anything it's flattery here.

Cash's cover was the first song I learned to play on guitar :)

It has been said it was indeed partially meant as flattery.

However, I agree with Quincy about the lyrical change. If you are going to do a cover because you like a song, don't change something as important as the lyrics, especially when its an emotional piece such as this.
